Trying Out a Trend

One of the biggest green beauty trends over the past year or two has been beauty from within. But as more and more beauty supplements come onto the market, it can be difficult to know which ones are worth it. If you’re new to beauty digestibles, I’d start with an electrolyte. Electrolytes are basically compounds that help the body to absorb water, and therefore help you get and stay hydrated.

For me, hydration is the cornerstone of beauty. Having dry skin introduced me to the need for hydration, but it’s also key for preventing acne and keeping skin looking fresh and youthful. So when I first encountered Age Quencher at the Holistic Beauty Expo this May, I was all about their beauty philosophy. It’s a simple premise, but one that bears repeating: beauty starts with what you put inside your body as much as what you put on it, and that moisture is key to beauty and aging well.

So when I had the chance to try their Hydrate Beauty Electrolyte, I was stoked. I love this notion of aging gracefully and as a woman in my mid-thirties, I’m really all about focusing on my health as a gateway to beauty.

Pros

Texture

I’ve tried a few samples of anti-oxidant and electrolyte drink mixes before, and I can sincerely say that the experience of the Hydrate Beauty Electrolyte has been my favourite so far. The powdered mix comes with a scoop, and you use it to mix with 16 ounces of water. I like using a water bottle for mixing as I feel shaken drink mixes perform better than ones stirred into water. The first thing I noticed about this mix is that there’s absolutely no chalky residue that didn’t mix with the water. It’s the first time I’ve experienced that, and I was so grateful that I didn’t have to cough and sputter my way through the end of the drink.

Special Event Prep

I also found that the Hydrate Beauty Electrolyte did actually make a difference in my hydration levels. I think that it is especially useful for times when you’re feeling dehydrated: if you had an event the night before and imbibed in an alcoholic drink or two, have eaten too many salty (or sugary) foods, are feeling under the weather with a cold or a stomach bug, or having been hitting it hard at the gym.

Appearance of Complexion

It’s so easy for our bodies to become dehydrated and I know that I was chronically dehydrated before I understood how to look for the signs. Because of this, the Hydrate Electrolyte has also been key pre-event, or anytime I wanted to amp up my beauty. I got into the habit of having one serving each day, and I’ve never had so many compliments about how great my complexion looked without makeup! It was super surprising.

Overall Wellness

But the other big difference that I experienced while testing out the product was how I felt. If you’ve ever sipped on water throughout a workout only to feel super bloated at the end, you’ll know what I’m talking about. The truth is, our bodies are just not that good at absorbing pure water. Hydration found in fruits and veggies is better, but it’s so much easier to down a glass of water.

The Hydrate Beauty Electrolyte made that a much more pleasant experience. I didn’t have to drink water until I felt like the rest of my day would be lost to washroom breaks. On top of all this, it contains a pack of B Vitamins, as well as beauty enhancing Vitamins C and E, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, and more.

Cons

Vitamin Dose

Overall, I had a really positive experience with the Hydrate Beauty Electrolyte with very few downsides. However, I did experience some nausea if I had the drink and a multi-vitamin during the same day. I attribute this to my current multivitamin which is extremely hard on my stomach already: I can’t take it without eating first. The simple solution was for me to avoid taking that multi-vitamin and have a single serving of the drink instead. Once I did that, the nausea went away. It was basically a problem of having a double dose of some of those healthy vitamins, in my opinion.

Flavour

The only other downside of the drink mix was, for me, the flavour. I didn’t find it overly sweet and was happy that it is sweetened with stevia. I’m not a big fan of sweetness in drinks. However, I’m a life-long tea drinker who loves green teas, black teas, and even sometimes bitter herbal teas. And so the orange flavour was new for me. I think someone who grew up drinking sodas or juices and are now trying to go a more healthy route would love this flavour.

And I think it’s a great idea that they created this flavour to appeal to health conscious converts. If I could change one thing about the product it would be to add a second flavour inspired by matcha or herbal teas. It would be nice to have a vitamin-packed matcha electrolyte that doesn’t have those cough-inducing granules that matcha can leave behind — but that’s just personal preference.

Having said all, I continue to drink the Hydrate Beauty Electrolyte because of its many benefits. And now you have a chance to as well!
